BUILD Pizzeria Roma Now Open in Berkeley

BUILD Pizzeria Roma is now open in downtown Berkeley, California providing the East Bay with an intriguing new dining option. Napa Valley hospitality industry entrepreneurs Lisa Holt and David Shapiro, along with Chef Brian Langevin and Chef Clara Yun, have designed Northern California’s first pizzeria which affords guests the opportunity to completely customize their own gourmet Roman style pizza.

BUILD Pizzeria Roma features a “create your own” concept which allows patrons to work with a chef at the build line to develop their own pizza using fresh, market-sourced ingredients. In addition, the restaurant’s bar features Italian gastro pub fare with small plates ranging from $6.00 to $14.00.

The personalized handcrafted pizza option is made possible by wood-fired ovens which generate temperatures of 800 to 1,000 degrees, high enough to bake each individualized pizza in under three minutes. Organic, locally sourced, farm-to-table ingredients are emphasized and there is a gluten-free crust option. The BUILD Pizzeria Foundation will raise money for worthy local and national causes and organizations on an ongoing basis.

Chef Brian Langevin, 31 years old and most recently the Executive Chef at Tony Gemignani’s Pizza Rock in Sacramento, grew up in the Bay Area working alongside his horticulturist father in the garden, thus developing a love at an early age for the farm-to-table concept. He furthered these interests by cooking his way through college and then training under a broad range of chefs. After working directly with Tony Gemignani for over a year, he was appointed to open Pizza Rock in 2010.

Working with Holt and Shapiro to ensure that the entirety of the BUILD Pizzeria Roma dining experience is a good one is Julia White who is in charge of front of the house operations.

The BUILD Pizzeria Roma bar showcases sixteen local craft beers on tap curated by Brandon Borgel (a veteran of the craft beer movement), as well as 12 Northern California wines on tap (one of the largest such selections in this area), plus an Italian focused wine list by the bottle. The restaurant’s full bar serves classic, contemporary and original cocktails from consulting mixologist Scott Beattie. The BUILD bar also features a sophisticated Italian tapas menu overseen by Chef de Cuisine Clara Yun, previously at The Dorchester (London) and Aqua (San Francisco).

Highlights of the 120 plus-seat loft like contemporary dining room, designed by Lisa Holt and Abueg Morris Architects, include repurposed materials from local sources and a contemporary Italian feel. With a juxtaposition of old and new materials, the space, with a neutral color scheme, showcases the build line for the pizzas and the two imported Italian wood-fired ovens. The bar area features black Chesterfield sofa booths that can accommodate parties of up to 20.
