The Unveiling of GEV Magazine’s Legendary Issue

GEV Magazine, the leader in merging food and fashion in the Bay Area is proud to announce and unveil the esteemed visionaries in wine and food on the cover of their forthcoming digital issue slated to come out on the first day of summer, June 21, 2013. The much anticipated Legendary Issue celebrates the contributions of Peter Mondavi Sr. (98), Cecilia Chiang (93), Margrit Mondavi (83), and Miljenko “Mike” Grgich (90). The memorable photo shoot was done recently at the magnificent Vintner’s Hall of Fame of the Culinary Institute of America in Greystone Napa Valley, known to celebrate the men and women whose collective vision, determination, and hard work have been responsible for the growth and worldwide prestige of the California wine and culinary industries.

“We feel that the CIA is the perfect setting to carry out our vision for this story especially because of what the institution has contributed to the advancement of food and wine. It was truly a historic day for us,” explained Editor Kaye Cloutman. A mixture of both nostalgia and excitement were the major sentiments that day as the living legends delighted in each other’s company and reminisced about certain occasions as if they just happened yesterday.

During the day Peter Mondavi, Sr. President, CEO and lead ambassador for C. Mondavi & Family and Napa’s very first winery Charles Krug, shared some of his valuable wisdom with CIA students Nick Rugen and Kathryn Schmitz, who are both currently enrolled in the Accelerated Wine & Beverage Program class. Many honors have been bestowed upon him throughout his distinguished career. In 1989 the Napa Valley Vintners Association that clearly defines the high regard in which his peers hold him named Peter one of the twelve Living Legends in Napa Valley wine history. In 2012 he was inducted at the Vintner’s Hall of Fame. “Today I feel rejuvenated! This is what life should be all about, good friends, good wines and shared stories.”

Margrit Mondavi is as much of a pioneer in Napa Valley as her late husband Robert Mondavi. She shares that much of her success and how she helped shape what Napa Valley is today is due to the support and inspiration of Robert. “Bob was behind me and always supporting me. If you have a good idea, don’t talk about it, do it!” she explained. Margrit brought the first summer festival to Napa in 1969 to Robert Mondavi Winery. Pairing art, music, and food with wine has become an integral part of what Napa’s culture is today.

Cecilia Chiang, a revered champion of authentic Mandarin cuisine humbly expressed her appreciation to today’s chefs who are breaking new ground and reshaping the dining scene in the culinary world. “I like that most chefs now understand the importance of simple prepared dishes. Until this moment, and with my age, I still couldn’t quite comprehend why they would want to hang around me, but I am thankful for their friendships. I learn a lot from them and I do enjoy being a mentor. It’s very rewarding” she added. Cecilia was recently given the prestigious honor in New York as the recipient for the James Beard Lifetime Achievement award. “If you combine all our ages, we represent almost 400 years of knowledge and experience in food and wine and our stories won’t fit in a single volume but today, and I’m sure my dear friends here will agree with me, is a new story that is worth writing. This day is something I will deeply cherish.”

An inductee to the Vintner Hall of Fame, Miljenko “Mike” Grgich is a legend in the Napa Valley. Over the past 50 years, Mike’s wines, crafted in the classic Old World tradition, have won a stream of California and international prizes, establishing Grgich Hills Estate as one of the premier wineries in the U.S. and the world. Mike’s most celebrated achievement came in 1976 when a Chardonnay he crafted for Chateau Montelena beat the very best wines in France in a now-famous blind tasting in Paris. This event that stunned the wine world catapulted the Napa Valley into the front ranks of the leading wine-producing regions of the world. This year Mike globally celebrates 90 years in grand style with satellite birthday dinners all over the world. “It is an honor being in the company of Cecilia, Margrit and Peter. This occasion is a first and has never been done. I salute GEV for making this happen” he adds.
