Mumm Napa’s New Photography Exhibit Opens February 15, 2014

Zoe Lowenthal Brown, School Girl, Rescue, California, 1954

Photographs by over 20 artists who emerged from the first 10 years of the California School of Fine Arts (CFSA) in San Francisco, including works by Pirkle Jones, Ruth Mandel, Ira Latour and John Upton, will be on display in a new exhibit opening February 15 at the Fine Art Photography Gallery at Mumm Napa in Rutherford. Titled The Golden Decade: Photography at the California School of Fine Arts, 1945-1955, the exhibit runs through July 13, 2014, at the winery’s Fine Art Photography Gallery.

The CFSA photography program, established in 1945 by Ansel Adams and developed by Minor White, was the first academic department in the country to teach photography as a fine art. Notable instructors, including Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham and Lisette Model, placed equal emphasis on aesthetic sensitivity and technical expertise, inspiring their students to create stunning images that captured the lives, emotions and scenes of post-World War II America.

An opening night sparkling wine reception will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and is open to the public. A number of the artists featured in the exhibit will be in attendance. Please RSVP to 707-967-7740. There is no charge to view The Golden Decade exhibit. Visitor center and fine art photography gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. Mumm Napa is located at 8445 Silverado Trail, Rutherford, CA 94573. All photography in the exhibit is represented by Smith Anderson North.
