La Toque Executive Chef and owner Ken Frank is pleased to announce “The State of American Foie Gras,” an educational culinary event to be held on-site on Saturday, July 5.  The event marks the second anniversary of the passage of California S.B. 1520, which banned the sale of foie gras products in California, and a law that Frank vehemently opposes.  Running from noon to 2 p.m., the tasting lunch will offer bites incorporating domestically-sourced foie gras prepared by six highly-acclaimed local chefs.

“I’m holding this event to remind our community about the absurdity that this law represents and to provide foie gras lovers with a place of refuge to enjoy this culinary delicacy,” said Frank. “Since the ban went into effect nearly two years ago in California, the number of top-quality foie gras farms in the United States has actually increased, instead of decreasing, which was the original hope of the law’s authors.  I’m hopeful we’ll find a reprieve from this unjust ban soon.”

The event will be free of charge and open to 50 guests total.  To gain admission, foie gras lovers will need to submit a post on La Toque’s Facebook wall (100-word max) addressing the topic, “Why California’s Foie Gras Ban is Foolish.”  Alternately, for those who don’t use social media, emails addressing the issue can be sent to ilovefoiegras@latoque.com (100-word max).  The 25 top responses will be selected for admittance to the event (plus one guest each) and the team’s favorite entries will be highlighted on La Toque’s social media pages.  The deadline to submit is Tuesday, July 1, 2014.  La Toque’s Facebook Page can be accessed at this link: https://www.facebook.com/latoque

Event attendees can look forward to enjoying delicacies from Duck de Jour and a complimentary selection of foie gras preparations from Sonoma Artisan, Hudson Valley Foie Gras and La Belle.  The six chefs on hand, each an expert in the delicacy’s preparation, will include Chef Patrick Mulvaney of Mulvaney’s Building & Loan, Chef Victor Scargle, Chef Mark Dommen of One Market, Chef David Bazirgan of Dirty Habit and Chef Douglas Keane along with Chef Ken Frank.  During the event, guests will have the opportunity to meet the chefs and producer Guillermo Gonzalez of Sonoma Artisan Foie Gras and discuss the current state of American foie gras.
