Napa Artist Penelope Moore pushes the boundaries of sensory experience by fusing art with nuances of wine. She translates the taste of wine into dynamic and expressive large-scale abstract oil paintings. Her new series “Palette of the Palate” is a visual interpretation of the palate, exploring how color and mood relate to taste.

“The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.” -Alberto Giacometti

Palette of the Palate: Napa Artist Paints the Taste of Wine – A visual interpretation of the palate, exploring how color and mood relate to taste. Penelope Moore pushes the boundaries of sensory experience by fusing art with nuances of wine. By isolating combinations of characteristics in wine, she translates taste into dynamic and expressive large-scale abstract oil paintings. She then pairs each painting with a wine of complementing components for viewers to taste as they view the paintings.

She begins each painting by first tasting, assessing and narrowing down the foremost flavor components in a wine. Based on viscosity, color, smell, fluidity and taste she uses her synesthetic sensibilities to visualize the painting then transfers her interpretation to a bold five-foot-by-six-foot color story oil on canvas, visually describing the wine.

In Penelope’s new series “Palette of the Palate”  she fuses her passion for wine with her classical training in fine art painting. She is known for painting wine, in a more literal sense, but recently took a leap-of-faith to paint completely abstract works of art. In doing so, she stepped into an entirely new realm of painting wine that redefines the way viewers experience art and wine altogether. Her abstract work invites viewers to delve deeper into the glass and look beyond the confines of structure; to see what they are tasting and to taste what they are seeing.

Since the launch of her new series, Penelope has created each piece LIVE on location in unpredictable Pop-Up Painting Sessions all over Napa Valley. With very little forewarning to her followers, she takes her five-foot-by-six-foot blank canvases, palette knives and oil paints to events and various locations to taste and create on the spot. Her recent pop-ups include such events as Yountville LIVE, CabFest at the Lincoln Theater in Yountville, Speakeasy at St. Clair Brown Winery, a flash appearance on Valentine’s Day simply propped up on the street corner at The Wine Thief Tasting Room at Oxbow, The Sound of Art and Wine at Monticello Vineyards where as she painted, Winemaker Chris Corley simultaneously played the “sound of wine” on the grand piano in the wine cellar. The first piece of the series titled “notes of red cherry + black plum + candied cranberry” was created in Los Angeles (while wearing a tutu) as a filmmaker and creative director captured the entire process. In collaboration with Dave Miner of Miner Family Wines, Penelope was recently featured painting his Miner Benedetto Cabernet Sauvignon LIVE on Sacramento FOX40 News. Her painting titled “cranberry + black pepper” was featured on the cover of Napa Valley Life Magazine’s April 2016 edition and in an interview by Huffington Post. The opening exhibition for the “Palette of the Palate” collection will debut in a very exclusive, top secret location in Napa Valley to be announced. In partnership with a local sommelier, each painting at the opening event will be professionally paired with a compatible counterpart for guests to taste as they view her art.
