Poggio Trattoria Kicks-off Summer Seafood Celebration Dinner Event

Fresh and sustainable seafood is what Poggio’s Festa Frutti di Mare is all about. More than just a Summer Seafood Celebration, it was a nod to the true rock stars of the evening, the local suppliers &  fishermen who use longline fishing methods and of course, Executive Chef Benjamin Balesteri, a fishing enthusiast himself, who is known to spend a great deal of his free time on the water. Chef Balesteri crafted his  special six-course prix-fixe tasting menu featuring seafood from Water2Table, available exclusively for this event. Siena Imports founder, and connoisseur of fine Italian wines, Romano Chietti, has hand-selected six exceptional wine pairings to accompany each dish. Puting his signature stamp on it, Chef Balesteri infuses traditional Italian ingredients like lardo, olive purees and guanciale, bringing California freshness & lightness to the palate for which the restaurant is known. The taste of each course was very clean all throughout and was not masked by heavy sauces at all. The selected wine pairings were also notably spot-on; spectacular actually and didn’t overwhelm the seafood’s subtle flavors.

Favorites were the Satrico Casale Del Giglio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Trebbiano 2014, all very clean, dry crisp wines. Another one I liked was the Chiaretto Di Mongia si li, Monte Cicogna, Grappello Gentile, Sangiovese, and Marzemino 2014. It reminded me of a light blend of Chianti almost like a Rosé. The after dinner liqueur of Malvasia Delle Lipari, Antichi Vinai, Pantelleria 2010 was a nice sweet counterpoint to the stone fruit in the crostata. Limited seats will be available for this memorable dining experience, at which guests will have the chance to meet and be led through the tasting by Water2Table founder Joe Conte, Siena Imports founder Romano Chietti, and Poggio’s executive chef Benjamin Balesteri.
