A16 Honors Chef Joyce Goldstein and Winemaker Lorenza Sebasti Pallanti for its Annual Festa della Donna Celebration


A16 announces its annual Festa della Donna celebration on Thursday, March 8, 2012, featuring acclaimed chef and author Joyce Goldstein and winemaker Lorenza Sebasti Pallanti of Castello di Ama Estate in Tuscany. An annual celebration, Festa della Donna, or International Women’s Day, dates back to the early 1900’s and celebrates the achievements of women past and present and is often symbolized by the exchange of yellow mimosa flowers. A16 honors this day each year with a special charity dinner featuring a woman guest chef and winemaker.

This year, A16 will donate 15% of the evening’s proceeds to La Cocina, an organization which helps low income entrepreneurs formalize and grow their businesses. La Cocina was founded in 2005 by a number of family and women-focused organizations coming together to create a commercial kitchen space and a dedicated program offering guidance on launching and successfully operating food industry businesses.

Guests attending A16’s Festa della Donna will enjoy a special selection of dishes created by Joyce Goldstein, in collaboration with A16’s Chef David Taylor. The festive menu will be available in addition to the restaurant’s à la carte menu. A16 will also highlight more than forty wines by women winemakers throughout the evening.

A resident of San Francisco, Goldstein is an icon in the culinary industry. Throughout the course of her career, she has owned and worked in a number of restaurants, founded the California Street Cooking School, and produced a series of award-winning cookbooks. Goldstein received the James Beard Award for Best Chef in California for 1993 and in 2005 was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from Women Chefs and Restaurateurs. Today, she writes for many publications including Wine & Spirits, Food & Wine and the San Francisco Chronicle. She is also a Founding Member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Women Chefs and Restaurateurs.

Winemaker Lorenza Sebasti Pallanti of Tuscany’s Castello di Ama has a strong passion and love for world-class wines. Founded by Pallanti’s family in 1972, Castello de Ama produces award-winning Chianti, Chardonnay, Vin Santo, and more. Pallanti is a second generation owner and winemaker and currently lives with her husband, also a winemaker, and family in the heart of Siena, Tuscany surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. Pallanti will be pouring her wine in addition to other exciting varietals produced by women winemakers throughout the evening.

A16 is named for the “autostrada” highway that runs from Naples to Canosa, Puglia in Southern Italy. Under the direction of Executive Chef David Taylor, A16 features fresh pasta, house-butchered and house-cured meats and authentic Neapolitan pizza. Complementing the Southern Italian menu, Wine Director/Owner Shelley Lindgren offers wines that highlight the indigenous grapes from regions such as Campania, Sardinia and Sicily.
