GEV Magazine was recently invited as special guests at a fashion show bringing various collections from the young innovative graduating class of California College of Arts Fashion Department to an audience of highly regarded individuals in the local style and academic arenas.
The 2012 Annual CCA Show featured 13 new collections created by senior Fashion Design students, juried by industry professionals and shown by runway models.
This year’s cutting-edge creations are aimed at a wide variety of audiences. They include collections by zero-waste aficionado Annie McCourt, whose process of cutting and patterning with only straight lines and 90- and 60-degree angles eliminates pattern-cut waste; Lauren Levin, who combines the traditional garb of Ecuador, handcrafted elements, and sheer textiles with a Continental feel; Vishaka Sachi Henrietta, who is interested in negative space as it manifests in eroded coastline landscapes and the work of the Spanish sculptor Eduardo Chillida; and Steven Soundara, whose men’s collection is intended to convey the idea (without the sensation, of course) of pain.
Fashion Show attendees will get to see projects from Fashioning Functional Gear, a recent course taught by fashion designer Lyndsie Nash and industrial designer Colin Owen, in which students investigated the intersection of fashion design and industrial design.
In the spirit of celebrating young, fresh and local talent, GEV Magazine will feature 5 designers from this fashion show and their creations for an extensive fashion spread editorial this July. This same issue will also feature 5 students from the California Culinary Academy and their select dish preparations from the recently celebrated Luce’s Culinary Clash. This competition brought the winning student to New York cooking at the James Beard House, alongside Chef Daniel Corey of Michelin-starred Luce Restaurant.
