Meals on Wheels 26th Annual Star Chefs & Vintners Gala

James Beard Award-winner Nancy Oakes (Boulevard | Prospect) returns for her 10th year as Gala Chair to lead an illustrious lineup of Northern California chefs as Meals On Wheels of San Francisco (MOWSF) announces the 26th Annual Star Chefs & Vintners Gala.  This year’s Gala will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. Star Chefs & Vintners Gala is MOWSF’s main source of contributions for the year, which enables the organization to serve one of the city’s most vulnerable populations – homebound seniors.

Executive Chef Nancy Oakes of Boulevard Restaurant

“The need for the services provided by Meals on Wheels of San Francisco continues to grow dramatically as the baby boomers age,” says Ashley McCumber, MOWSF Executive Director. “In the past five years we have seen a 47% growth in client meals in our community. We are grateful for the generous support of renowned chefs, wineries and corporate sponsors. It is because of them that we are able to provide almost 1.1 million every year to the growing population of homebound seniors in San Francisco.”

More than 100 notable chefs from several of Northern California’s top restaurants join Oakes to create the ultimate celebration of food, wine and cocktails. The evening begins at 5 p.m. with an hors d’oeuvre and wine reception, featuring creations from more than 40 chefs and wineries, followed by a three-course, sit-down meal. Each of the Gala’s 10 seating sections will have a unique, carefully orchestrated menu, with each course designed by a different executive chef.

Among the chefs participating in this year’s Gala are Lori Baker and Jeff Banker (Baker & Banker), David Bazirgan (Fifth Floor), Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski (State Bird Provisions), Mark Dommen (One Market), Tyler Florence (Wayfare Tavern), Tanya Holland (Brown Sugar Kitchen), Mourad Lahlou (Aziza), Roland Passot (La Folie), Staffan Terje (Perbacco) and Christopher Thompson (A16).

A collection of more than 60 of California’s premier vintners will also participate in the Gala. Thirty of the vintners  –  including Bespoke Collection, Cakebread Cellars, Chappellet Winery, Chateau Montelena Winery, Duckhorn Wine Company and Rarecat Wines– will provide wine pairings during the meal.

At a specialty cocktail bar, celebrity bartenders Daniel Bishop (Prospect), Jon Gaspirini (Rye |15 Romolo) and Scott Beattie (Scott Beattie Cocktails) will serve up classic spirits and inventive concoctions.

The evening culminates with a lavish dessert reception featuring decadent sweets from Yigit Pura (Tout Sweet Pâtisserie), Jake Godby (Humphry Slocombe), Kara Haspel Lind (Kara’s Cupcakes) and William Werner (Craftsman and  Wolves), to name a few.

During both live and silent auctions, guests will have the opportunity to bid on extraordinary lot items including exotic vacations and private dinners with celebrity chefs. This year’s gala will also include a raffle for a 2013 MINI Cooper; a maximum of 1,000 raffle tickets will be sold at $50 each. The evening’s exciting climax is “Fund-A-Route,” in which guests pledge cash donations towards funding an entire meal delivery route for one year.  Guests at the 2012 Gala raised a record-breaking $495,000 for “Fund-A-Route,” while the event as a whole raised a grand total of $1.9 million. This was the most money raised in the 25 year history of the Gala and provided approximately 475,000 meals to homebound seniors.

Gala sponsors include AT&T, Farella Braun + Martel, First Republic Bank, Kaiser Permanente, Mellon Capital, Safeway and Valley Services. Media sponsors for the event are ABC7-TV, San Francisco Business Times, San Francisco Chronicle| and San Francisco magazine.  The Gala is produced by Hartmann Studios and Taste Catering and Event Planning.
