Gladys Knight performs at 2013 Red Cross Gala, Hope by Design

One of San Francisco’s most anticipated events of the year, the 2013 Red Cross Gala – ‘Hope by Design’, featured a musical performance by eight-time Grammy award-winning R&B icon Gladys Knight. This year’s Red Cross Gala, presented by Dignity Health, Wells Fargo Bank, and Kaiser Permanente, was held recently at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco’s design district.

Honorary co-chairs Honorable Willie L. Brown Jr. and Michael Covarrubias, civic and corporate leaders, and the Bay Area’s leading philanthropists gathered for the festivities which included cocktails, dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions, and a raffle drawing to benefit the American Red Cross Bay Area’s disaster readiness and response efforts that spread hope in our local community.

Lloyd Dean, President and CEO of Dignity Health, was honored and presented the 2013 Humanitarian CEO of the Year Award to for his commitment to providing immediate humanitarian assistance to those in need.

Underwritten by McKesson & Dignity Health, guests enjoyed music by Empress of Soul Gladys Knight, an icon who has enjoyed number one hits in pop, R&B, and Adult Contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television, and live performance. Georgia-born Knight began performing at recitals at age 4 in the Mount Mariah Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA. Three years later, in 1952, she won the grand prize on television’s “Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour,” and the following year she, along with her brother, Bubba, and her cousins, formed The Pips and had their first hit in 1961. In 1962 the group was renamed Gladys Knight & The Pips and went on to achieve icon status, recording some of the most memorable songs of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years, including four solo albums during the past decade. She recently released her newest album, featuring the hit “I Who Have Nothing.” Her other accolades include an induction into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame, an Essence Award for Career Achievement, a Lifetime Achievement Award from BET, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The black or red tie event also highlighted the talents, creativity, and imagination of some of the Bay Area’s top designers who created individual tablescapes, each designed to reflect the Red Cross mission.
