Award-winning Chef/Owners Teague Moriarty and Matt McNamara of Michelin-starred Sons and Daughters and Sweet Woodruff, will open The Square, a restaurant and bar in the historic Washington Square Bar & Grill space in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, on March 1, 2014. Paying tribute to what Washington Square Bar & Grill was to its community in the 1970s, The Square will be a comfortable and affordable gathering place.

“We are thrilled to be in the good company of other classic North Beach establishments being reincarnated as true neighborhood gathering spots, and to be amongst other restaurants changing the landscape of the city’s late-night dining scene,” says Chef/Owner Teague Moriarty. Chef/Owner Matt McNamara adds, “Our menu will stay true to the level of quality we hold at Sons & Daughters with clean, classic, and accessible flavors, and we’ll have a strong focus on hospitality – creating an environment where guests feel part of something.”

Serving until 1:00 a.m. five nights a week, The Square will offer high quality, straightforward food and beverages. The menu will encompass everything from bar snacks to family-style group dining options, with dishes such as March Pickles and Bresaola; Chicken Fried Quail with romesco; Barley and Green Garlic RisottoWhole Smoked Dungeness Crab with spring herb remoulade and grilled bread; and Babyback Ribs with cucumber and mint.

Sons and Daughters’ Beverage and Wine Director Amy Racine will oversee the 65-bottle wine list. The wine list will focus on classic varietals from California and Europe, while the beer menu will offer low to high-end options, including both domestic and foreign selections available by the bottle and on draft. The full bar menu features approachable and fun cocktails, such as Geranium “7 n’ 7,” with Johnnie Walker Red topped with Geranium soda; and French 226, a twist on the classic French 75, made with Hendrick’s Gin, fresh citrus, chamomile, and Champagne.

Steeped in San Francisco history, the renovated 3,000-sq.-foot space will have 90 seats including a communal table, banquets, and counter seating at the original well-worn copper top bar. To preserve the spirit of the iconic North Beach location, the chefs will reserve one-third of the restaurant for walk-ins. Debbie McNamara, Chef Matt’s mother who also designed Sons & Daughters and Sweet Woodruff, is spearheading the restaurant’s design. In the early evening, natural light pours in through large windows facing Washington Square Park, while at night the room is suffused by the glow from clusters of lights lining the length of the interior.

Located at 1707 Powell Street, off Washington Square Park, The Square will be a welcoming spot for all in the heart of North Beach. Dinner will be served from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Walk-ins are welcome and reservations can be made by calling 415-525-3579.
