The Extravaganza of the 2014 Pebble Beach Food & Wine

By Donté R. Young

From the moment you hit the iconic 17-mile drive and take in the breath taking views of beautiful Pebble Beach, California, you instantaneously know you are in for a weekend, which is to be treasured. A weekend that happened to be highlighted by the seventh annual Pebble Food & Wine.

Presented by Food & Wine, the seventh annual Pebble Beach Food & Wine highlighted the theme “Epicure 7th Time Down to the Line.” This theme could not have been more appropriate as there was not one disappointing moment during this year’s food and wine extravaganza.

The festivities began Friday evening at Dinner with the Stars of Los Angeles and featured top toques like Manzke, Voltaggio, Shook, Dotolo, Menashe and Hermann who all collaborated to bring the very best of this sprawling megalopolis’ cuisine in one sensational meal which was highlighted by wines and sparkling from Château d’Esclans, Château Clos Dubreuil and Roederer Estate.

Feeling the urge to work off some of the calories consumed during the Dinner with the Stars, guest were invited to dance the night away at the official after-party which highlighted such sponsors as Stella Artois, Patrón, Hoegaarden and Leffe and carried on way into the early morning.

Feeling officially initiated from my evening prior, my Saturday begins with a cooking demonstration at the Jenn-Air Master Class Culinary Stage featuring Celebrity Chef Robert Irvine and star of the ever popular show Restaurant Impossible. Chef Irvine’s high voltage personality energized and prepared me the long day ahead.

Next stop was the first official day of the Grand Tasting under the Lexus Grand Tasting Tent. With over 300 wines from top-notch producers from around the world to a “who’s who” list of 30 top celebrity chefs, this was the place to be and be scene.

Not to stop there, I then headed back over to The Inn at Spanish Bay for the most talked-about and invite-only party presented by The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Guest mingled amongst chefs Hubert Keller, Jonathan Waxman, Guy Fieri, Brad Farmerie, Antonia Lafaso and Roy Yamaguchi while partaking in a feast including California Caviar, Joe’s Stone Crab and Morro Bay Oysters while sipping on cold Stella Artois and Roederer Champagne. A collection of one-of-a-kind cocktails like the Dorian Gray with Bacardi Pineapple fusion, Luxardo amaretto, vanilla ginger brown sugar, lemon juice, pineapple juice and caramelized pineapple puree and the Imperial Court with Tyku coconut sake, lychee puree, lemon juice, ginger lemongrass syrup and cucumber soda showed as the true stars of the party.

My evening rounded out with the Proprietor’s of Restaurant Bistro Moulin in Monterey and the Executive Team of Château Clos Dubreuil, US Division.

The festivities commenced during the second day underneath the Lexus Grand Tasting Tent. Where I had the pleasure of hobnobbing with famed Chef and Host of The Chew, Carla Hall. Overall, the entire weekend was a hue success and left me anticipating what’s to come with Pebble Beach Food & Wine 2015.
