Santana Row’s Hotel Valencia Unveils Oveja Negra – Shareable Bites with a Global Twist

Ready for some unruly tapas in San Jose?

Hotel Valencia at Santana Row presents its newest culinary offering: Oveja Negra, globally influenced shared plates from the creative mind of Executive Chef Ocean Orssten. If last night’s preview is any indication, it’s going to be a delicious success. The menu features small bites such as lamb barbacoa rubbed with chilies and epazote (wrapped in banana leaves and slow cooked overnight) accompanied by hand-made bone marrow corn tortillas ($20), Michelada Reposado tequila marinated grilled jumbo shrimp with tajin and housemade “clamato” broth ($18), and Kitfo, a play on a traditional Ethiopian dish that combines sushi grade kampachi, serrano chiles, berbere spice, lemon juice and tangerine oil ($16).

Oveja Negra offers an array of craft cocktails and wines under the direction of Hotel Valencia’s Food and Beverage Director, Jonathan Whitwell. The restaurant’s signature drink, the Mezcal Brilliante ($14), for example, blends smoky El Silencio Mezcal with the tart, bright flavors of Yuzu marmalade, grapefruit and agave topped with a freeze-dried Yuzu rim.


Desserts, under the deft hand of Pastry Chef Roslynn Vu, include a perfectly balanced Hazelnut Passionfruit Tart (crispy praline with passionfruit cremeux and sesame seed candy) and Tres Leches Cake (blood orange, honeycomb crunch, vanilla mascarpone chantilly cream).

The menu will vary seasonally, taking its cues from Chef Orssten’s desire to be playful and irreverent with his locally-sourced ingredients – after all, Oveja Negra means “Black Sheep” in Spanish.

Taking over the old Citrus space, the cozy, relaxed atmosphere by Houston’s Rottet Studio mixes traditional Spanish interior elements (wood paneling, terracotta tiles, Mediterranean furniture and traditional patterned plaster) with modern touches such as sleek steel finishes. The overall effect is warm and inviting.
